Columba Catholic Primary School Acknowledges the Bunurong Peoples’ of the Kulin Nation as Traditional Owners and Custodians and pay respects to their Elders past, present, and emerging.
Columba acknowledges the Bunurong’s continuing relationship to the land and waterways and respects that their connection and spiritual identity are maintained through ancient ceremonies, songlines, dance, art, and living culture.
We pay tribute to the invaluable contributions of the Bunurong and other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Elders who have guided and continue to guide our work.

Principal Message 28th July 2023
At Columba, we belive that Extracurricular activities are essential for students because they allow them to learn about themselves and their interests. They also help them develop skills that will help them in their future careers and life. They are also crucial for students because they allow students to make friends, improve their social skills, and get involved in new activities that might not otherwise be accessible to them. They can also help students find their passion in life.
Taking part in extracurricular activities at school teaches life skills that aren’t always taught at home or in school, like how to accept failure even when you think you deserve to succeed. Students have an opportunity through extracurricular activities at school to learn about teamwork, develop strong communication skills, experience what it feels like to stand on stage in front of an audience, time management, and many more. They are also taught to cooperate without bullying others.
What are the benefits of extracurricular activities in schools?
While extracurricular activities often take up a lot of time outside of regular school hours, they also provide students with opportunities to gain life skills that will be crucial for their future success. These activities are a great way to keep your child engaged and allow them to learn something new.
At Columba, we believe that Extracurricular activities are an essential part of a child’s development. They increase a child’s self-confidence, help them learn how to be more social, and help them develop their talents. Many parents are concerned about the amount of time and money they spend on extracurricular activities. However, there is evidence that extracurricular activities can positively impact children’s academic performance as well as their mental health and well-being.
Every child has a different personality, and those personalities need to be cultivated positively. We know that our school is a place where children spend a large part of their day. However, it’s important to help them develop other skills and interests outside of the classroom as well. There are many extracurricular activities that children in school can participate in. These activities allow children to get involved and have fun while also learning new skills and building their resumes.
These extracurricular activities include sports, music, arts, dance, drama, and many more! Sports activities like soccer and football can help children learn about the importance of teamwork, while art classes can teach kids about various types of art forms. Academic clubs like chess clubs or debate clubs can also help students develop their skills in different areas.

Important iPad InformationChange for 2024 BYOD |
Currently, Columba facilitates a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) iPad program for students in grades 3-6. While this has worked for many years, we have identified that this model is not a sustainable moving forward. In 2024, Columba will no longer require grade 3 (current grade 2) students to purchase and bring their own device to school. The school will purchase and supply each child with a device for use at school, that will exclusively be their own and only be used by them from grades 3-6. The device will stay at school and be managed by the school. After consultation with staff, the decision has been made to use Chrome Books as the device of choice, which is a change from iPads. This will ONLY affect the 2024 grade 3 students and will not affect the 2024 grade 4-6 students, who will continue to use their own iPads in the classroom. By 2027 however, all students in grades 3-6 at Columba will be using Chromebooks, which will be managed by the school and remain at school. I am hopeful that this is a welcome change for families, being that it means our current grade 2 families will not need to purchase an iPad for the 2024 year for use at school. It also means that the school can further enhance the security of our systems, while allowing students to continue to develop their skills and knowledge in the on-line and tech world. If you have questions or feedback on this change, please contact me by phone or email. |

This Fortnight's Awards
RESPECT
Each fortnight we focus on one of our school values: Respect, Fairness, Generosity, Inspiration, Perseverance. We model and look for opportunties to teach our students values which underpin the way we believe we should live and interact with others and with our world.
Respect is shown when we think about the feelings, ideas and needs of others.
Jesus is a great model of respect; he always treated others with kindness and acted in ways that made people feel safe and happy.
“So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the law and the prophets". - MATTHEW 7:12
This is the value of Alcott Blue House named after Dylan Alcott, a tennis champion and someone who stands up for those with a disability, highlighting how courageous people can be with the right attitude.
Perseverance is about never giving up and always trying our best.

African Drumming visited our school and gave our students a chance to dance, beat some drums, sing and just have a bunch of fun. Thank to Mrs Lucas for organising this wonderful learning.

At a recent meeting with all our School Crossing Supervisors, we asked them to identify the safety issues they are experiencing at their crossings. One of the most common ones was drivers not stopping at the stop line where the flag is displayed. Many drivers stop at the dotted walk lines.
