Principal Message 19th April 2024
Dear Families,
A warm welcome back to all families for a start of term 2. As the warm days become less and there is less light in the day, it means winter sports have started and our colder winter months draw closer.
Next week there is another opportunity to make the most of the warmer weather when our community will have 5 consecutive days away from school.
Wednesday 24th April - Professional Learning Day
Thursday 25th April - ANZAC DAY
Friday 26 April - Time in Lieu for all staff
On Wednesday the 24th April, all school staff will be at school. It is a professional learning day for all staff. Together we will develop our knowledge and ability to enhance learning environments through the school and continue to develop the best possible learning experiences and environment for all our students.
I genuinely look forward to many wonderful experiences Term 2 will provide our 270 students. Many classes will be going on excursions, some have incursions where we have outside experiences come to Columba! The grade 5/6 and Grade 2 students will experience this soon when a space dome visits Columba!
We have our Cross Country Event just around the corner, and a fun Catholic Education week when will will visit other schools in our Parish, St. James Nar Nar Goon and St John's KooWeeRup.
Important Dates Term 2
In term 2 there are a few staff changes. These changes have been made to support teaching staff and support teachers with learning needs through the school.
- Liam Marson will be working as an Learning Support Officer on Monday and Thursday.

We are very excited that we have been able to employee new staff, while maintaining continuity and high expectations and standards in our classrooms. How wonderful it is that all of our teachers have expertise in teaching and supporting student learning though the whole school.
We look forward to a wonderful Term 2 full of learning and fun.
Take care

On ANZAC Day we honour the memories of the men and women who sacrificed their own freedom and dreams in the defence of a society that is good and just.
This day in April is a time to pause and reflect on those young people, whose time on earth was senselessly short, yet their actions will endure for all posterity.
As Christians we look to the resurrection of Jesus for light on the ultimate meaning of that heroism in the building up of the kingdom and pray for deliverance from suffering in the hope that God “will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more” (Revelation 21:4).
As conflict continues in places such as Ukraine and threatens to erupt elsewhere around the globe, let us use ANZAC Day to spend some time reflecting on the horror of what could happen if we were to walk away from peace.
Let us always put stock in the need to purify our hearts, and seek the grace of the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with love.
So rather than be divided on ANZAC Day, let us remember the children of all nations.
Our commemoration of ANZAC Day has become universal in recognising the suffering of all those who have fallen so that regardless of your country, religion, background, or belief, we see everyone as brothers and sisters.
We will remember them, age shall not weary them, but we pray for them, and we pray for their everlasting glory, that they be purified and enter into eternal peace.
Diocese of Sale
Vocation Prayer 2024
HEAVENLY FATHER, Lord of the harvest, we earnestly ask you to bless our
diocese and the Church with many priests, deacons and religious who will love
you fervently, and gladly and courageously live their lives in service to your
Son’s Church under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Bless our families and parishes that we may be given the grace and strength to
live our baptismal vocation to be holy, as You are. Bless us that we will respond
to your invitation to be living witnesses and disciples of hope as we discern our
life in your son, Jesus Christ.
Bless young men and women to respond openly and generously to your
invitation to become ministers of your Word and Sacraments, or to serve You
faithfully in the covenant of Marriage, or the dignity of single life.
Mary, Mother of the Church, the model of every vocation, help us to say “yes”
to the Lord who calls us to cooperate in the divine plan of salvation.
Amen

Dear Parent/Carer
Re: Consent to Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)
Prep Students only
This letter and the attached Fact Sheet include important information about the Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) and the proposed handling of your child/children’s personal information.
Our school will take part in the AEDC between May and July this year. The AEDC is a national census that is conducted every three years by the Australian Government, in partnership with state and territory governments. It measures how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.
The AEDC is voluntary and it does not measure how well children are doing at school, nor how their school compares to other schools. Instead, it shows how children are growing and progressing in five key areas, what is being done well and what can be improved. AEDC data is used by schools, early childhood organisations, researchers and governments to help plan and improve services and supports for children and families. This is why it is important for all children in their first year of school to be included in the AEDC. You can learn more about the ways AEDC data is used at https://www.aedc.gov.au/.
What does this mean for your child?
The AEDC is completed by teachers based on their knowledge of the children. Children do not need to do anything to be included in the census and will attend class as usual while the census is conducted. The census will start on 01/05/2024.
Teachers will answer questions about the five key areas of early childhood development, which are: physical health and wellbeing, emotional maturity, social competence, language and cognitive skills (school-based), and communication skills and general knowledge. You can see all the questions at https://www.aedc.gov.au/avedi.
You can be confident that your child’s privacy will be protected.
We understand how important it is to keep your child’s information private. This is why the AEDC uses a secure website to collect and keep their information.
More information about how AEDC data (including your child’s information) is collected, protected and used is in the Fact Sheet.
What do parents need to do?
For the purposes of the AEDC, the Australian Government Department of Education seeks your consent to collect personal information about your child from our school. This includes known information about your child’s health.
If you consent to the collection of your child's information, you do not need to do anything.
If you do not consent to the collection of your child's information, please contact the principal, Andrew Greco, before 01/05/2024, and no information about your child will be collected.
You can also withdraw your consent after this time. If you do so, then the Australian Government Department of Education will stop using your child’s information and will not provide it to anyone else. However, information that has already been shared, reported or published cannot be removed and may continue to be used (but your child will not be individually identified in that information).
To find out more about the AEDC, please read the frequently asked questions section on the AEDC website at https://www.aedc.gov.au/parents/faqs or phone 1800 092 548.
Your child’s information will only be used for the purposes described in this letter and in the Fact Sheet. The Privacy Statement contained on the AEDC website provides more detail on how their information will be protected and shared, and can be found at www.aedc.gov.au/parents/privacy-statement.
Thank you for supporting the AEDC.

FACT SHEET – COLLECTING, PROTECTING AND USING AEDC DATA
What information is collected?
Data collected as part of the AEDC will include personal information about your child, including names, addresses, cultural and linguistic background, and information about their health. This information may be taken from school records, to help teachers complete the AEDC.
When completing the AEDC, teachers may be supported by cultural consultants who are employees or contractors of our school and can help them understand the cultural context of First Nations children.
How is AEDC data managed?
The AEDC is managed in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs). The APPs regulate the collection, use, disclosure and storage of personal information by Australian government agencies, and some private sector organisations, and is part of the Privacy Act 1998 (Cth).
Personal information about your child will be used to link AEDC data with information from other organisations, such as health departments, which will keep it confidential. Your child’s AEDC results will be kept separate from their identifying information and no-one will be able to access both at the same time.
AEDC results for individual children are never reported, and all published AEDC data is anonymised, meaning that names, ages, addresses and other identifying information are removed before the data is published.
You can see how data is collected and presented by visiting www.aedc.gov.au/data. Data from the 2024 collection will be presented in a similar way.
Who is AEDC data shared with and how is it shared?
Schools
Eligible schools receive a summary of the AEDC results in the form of school profiles. School profiles do not report any AEDC results about individual children. Schools may share their profiles with other organisations or people in confidence for purposes like better supporting children, but cannot make the profiles public. To further protect the privacy of children, schools with less than six children participating in the AEDC will not receive a school profile.
Governments and school sector peak bodies
State and Territory government departments and Catholic and Independent schools' peak bodies will receive anonymised information for all children in their school sector.
Integrating authorities and data linkage units
Selected agencies will receive personal information about children participating in the AEDC to link their AEDC results with other data. Depending on the mechanisms used for data linkage, they may also receive anonymised AEDC results. These agencies include Commonwealth agencies, State and Territory governments, universities and research institutes that have demonstrated to have secure enough systems to protect the privacy of children.
Researchers
AEDC Data Management Agency
Personal information and anonymised AEDC results are held and managed on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Education by a nominated Data Management Agency. The AEDC Data Management Agency is carefully selected to ensure that AEDC data are managed in accordance with the highest security standards. The current AEDC Data Management Agency is the Social Research Centre.Friday 3rd May- Senior assembly, Prayer led by 5/6P

A name will be drawn at random from a hat. Re: Enhancing Catholic School Identity (ECSI) Survey 2024 I write to invite you to participate in the ECSI survey which will assist us in better understanding how our Catholic Identity is expressed in work and practice here at Columba Catholic Primary School. The Catholic University in Leuven, Belgium, was commissioned by the Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) to design a process and tools, based on sound research, to accomplish the goal of understanding our current Catholic identity and where the school community might like to see itself in the future. The ECSI survey is a key element in this process and I write to request your participation. The online survey gathers responses from students in Years 5 and 6, all staff, and a representative sample of parents. This survey is only available through the project website and you are asked to complete the survey online. Please refer to the attached ‘ECSI Survey Instructions for Parents’ which provides instructions and login details. It may take you up to an hour to complete the survey. Try not to get caught up in the questions, simply respond intuitively. Your responses to this survey are guaranteed to be kept anonymous. If you have any questions, please contact me through the school office. Thank you for your consideration of this request and for your anticipated participation. |
